We're doing so because we were asked to do so at the beginning of the thread by one of the forum moderators:

One rule, the answer and prize must be in spoiler tags, in case anyone wants to answer the puzzle without help

Putting the spoilers up certainly isn't hard and in no way hurts anyone. I can also certainly see checking this thread before checking the puzzle every day and seeing if you can guess the correct answer before looking at which one it actually is. It also helps to keep this thread neat looking, but i don't think that was a goal.
