I think merchandise would be fantastically appropriate if it were always in stock, unlike other shops, and had a set price, similar to a prize redemption center after a plot, only with Neopoints instead of gained points. That way, both the poor and the rich can support their own sides without it ...

Does it really matter if someone else has more or fewer Jelly pets than you do? How do you know that your two constitute such a record? There could be tons of players out there whom you have not encountered yet that could easily have double your 'record.'
