You are of course correct in that you need to take into account all factors, in this case it seems the only factor is that e got a ticket he may or may not have deserved.

I just heard about this on the radio, a Lawyer in New York sued and won over a parking ticket he got, he paid $10,000 over a $65 ticket.

In my opinion, sure it is OK to hold principle above money, but when you're losing this much on it, it just isn't worth it.
