Its terrible, i hear about this kinda thing on the internet all the time, I just never thought it'd happen in my city....
To my journalists :-o
Thats right, like much of the western world today, Perth newspaper journalists have become
fearmongering chewbacca monkeys, I dont know what to do!
Cue Roffling.

In regards to such a hilarious issue, I feel that last weeks Penny-Arcade comic really surmises the brilliance of this ongoing bull faeces that comes from our media. But its like, so totally not good if you have a MOS, if your PAW.
And if you're NIFOC... well go put some pants on. then click

Pedophile: hi New Member [hello, I can't use the computer very well]
Me: *block* [I don't want to know you; talk to me again and you will find that CD9 also means 'help help she's put her foot somewhere painful']
Seriously, I've never even heard of some of these. CD9? What? Maybe it's because I don't actually talk to people who use too much chatspeak. I guess I'm a pedophile-free loser, then.
Though their interpretation of New Member is great.
ETA: aww, I forgot about PPT's filter for the er 'n-o-o-b' word.

For a while in elementary school my friends and I would use something like 'CD9' when we were up to our devious 10-year-old plans. We'd type '9' for when our parents were in the room, which was the cue for the other person to not send ANY messages until we typed '69' to mean they'd gone.

ROFLZ, that comic.

They made me really laugh. I never thought bf/gf was hard to decode, nor pron. And their description of New Member is pretty funny too. However, I don't think I've ever heard of the rest, nor do I see the above often. If my mum comes in, I just shrink the conversation window, though I barely ever say something I would care if she saw. If someone started throwing phrases like that at me, I'd block them. ;_;

The FCMs have been hitting Chicago every now and then. Thankfully they're not quite as stupid.

This is pretty funny! I've never heard of half of those. I also wonder where they get those happy little statistics from...Probably from people where they were sure they'd get an answer of "yes, someone has approached me online" from half the people.

I don't know why thats funny, cause phr33ks on the net is a serious problem. Though I can say their statistics are correct.
Though I was thinking,"I think everyone knows what pron means.."
EDIT: I meant to say I CAN'T say their statistics are correct.

I would venture to say that if you have to make up codes and lie about what you're doing, you probably shouldn't be doing it.

A common misjudgement, people assume just because others use Internet, they would also know teh Intarweb language..
But it is indeed not as laughable as people think. My parents don't even know how chatrooms work, the only knowledge about it they have, is from the news (stories similar to the above). I think it's a good idea to teach parents to be more aware about the dangers of chatrooms. People on this forum might not be as gullible, but what about a 10-year old that just proudly learned about chatrooms?

I think that the journalists share this one story, with the same abbreviations nobody ever uses, ergo, the journalists knowing all this are the pedophiles.

Weirdest. Article. Ever.
Firstly, I think most kids now days know not to be silly and do weird stuff on the net with strangers, cause hopefully their parents have warned them to be careful about sexual predators on the internet. Secondly, its all about being a good parent and just setting boundaries with your kids and the usage of internet. My parents set rules with me, and at the time they didn’t seem fair, but now I'm older and wiser the rules made a whole lot more sense, and I'm thankful for my parents doing that for me. Learning the chat speak or looking out for signs isn’t any good for keeping kids safe. Just being a good parent and setting a few rules, not being so laid back on what your kids do on the net and who they do it with, and allowing kids to be introduced to chartrooms or forums so early on will stop any problems.
