Okay, Wikipedia.

The term "fraternities", and the female-only equivalent is called a sorority, a word first used in 1874 at Gamma Phi Beta at Syracuse University.
The use of Greek letters started with the first such organization, Phi Beta Kappa, which used Greek letters to hide their secret name.

So it appears its a superiority complex thing. :)
And put's me in mind of Warhammer and the Adeptus Sororitas.
Who are cool.

No, they are perhaps one of the most kittens things that I've ever heard of in my life, and fortunately as far as I know there aren't any here.

High school sororities exist, and according to my former English teacher, they used to be quite common. Our high school sorority was called the Revelers. Admittedly, that sounds a lot better than "partygoing high school girls who get drunk at every opportunity," but it meant essentially the same thing.
A lot of sororities are good. A lot are bad, too. If you ever get the opportunity to see the episode of King of the Hill where Luanne joins a cult masquerading as a sorority, I recommend you seize it.
