Those sharks probably havn't ever been seen because they live really deep in the ocean. They sure are cool looking, but I hope I never EVER see one.

How can they live in super deep ocean if they prey on seals/sea lions...?

They remain in the deep ocean during the day and come up at night to feed.

Robert's right. In that book where I first got all jumpy about cookie-cutter sharks (It's called the Variety of Life, and it's probably the widest-ranged zoology book I've ever seen. Love the thing.) it says that they're deep-water sharks. Which WOULD explain the *shudder* eye. And it's not just seals they eat, they do that to other sharks! MUAHAHA!

The sharks reminds me of Bruce from Finding Nemo. o_O

The sharks look to me like they are wearing sunglasses and grinning.

[I'm posting an URL so I won't make anyone scared..]

That's evil! Gettittaway! >.<

:cry: Mommy! Mommy, he scared me! I'm gonna have bad dreams again! ;_;

Hmm... I certainly wouldn't like that shark if it cut my cookies!

You people are teh funneh

Okay, now I have to share one of the most coolest creatures under the sea...The Mimic Octopus.
One second he's a normal chillin' octopus.
Image
But the next time you look there is not an octotpus to be found! No, all you see is a cute little crab.
Image
Don't startle it though. Because suddenly it will TRANSFORM into a flat fish :o
Image
...or a lionfish.
Image
....or a sea snake.
Image
...or something else!

Tricksy creature. But that is but a mere fraction of the Mimic Octopus's myriad of disguises!

Whoa that mimic octopus is sooo cool :o "normal chillin' octopus" eh? 8) I dunno about you, but that crab doesn't look like a crab to me. Then again, it's just me

Sun Jan 16, 2005 5:32 am

Wow... that octopus is pretty neat.
And those cookie cutter sharks scare me :o They look really creepy with those big eyes and those teeth.... eep....

That octopus is soooooo tricksy! It's like a shapeshifter or something. That is SO COOL.

I read up on em. Evidently, they were only recently discovered (shows how little we know about the ocean...but then again it was probably discovered when it was caught between "forms" or something). Octopi are among the most intelligent cephalopods. I wouldn't be surprised if the mimic changes into something according to the type of predator that's after it ("Hmmm...uh oh, a marine biologist! Don't wanna get discovered! Better change into something boring..." *mimics a feather star*).

It also knows lots more disguises than those mentioned. It can mimic flatfish, mantis shrimp, sea snakes, jellyfish, anemones, and lionfish. Who knows, maybe it learns new disguises by watching other animals and imitating them.

Setekh....you scare me muchly >.< I was literally like this: O_O

Great angle of photography, but incredibly scary....eeep! It looks like it's about to EAT me!

its microscopic in size im afraid :(
still, work our way round the exoskeletal problems and we have ourselves a mean fighter... did i just say that out loud?...ooops

*muses* the ocean scares me. I've never been afraid of water - I love swimming - but...it's just. too. big.

Something about the thought of all that water and all those creatures really freaks me out. I don't understand it. Just....all the creepy living-type things in the deep ocean, and the more well known but still scary (read: sharks, octopi, jellyfish) things in shallower waters also freak me out. I could never ever ever be a diver.

welcome to the land of humanity :)
its natural, the ocean is full of things that tend to hurt creatures like us.
as are woods. (bears)
mountains. (those things... kougas?)
open plains. (tigers)
buildings (spiders anyone?)
and.. well okay you should really be scared of just about anything really, but the ocean in particular, because a poisen that injures a sea creature will kill us because of our higher circulation speed (theres a word for it, but its six in the morning and ive not slept)

Sun Jan 16, 2005 6:11 am

Cougars. I heard a baby one yelling for its mummy in the fall, and we saw one leg of a deer one had killed... It's supposed to be a mom and two cubs. I'm not really afraid of them, because they've got plentiful food and as afraid of humans. (Though I still sing when walking the dog. See "Princess and the Goblins".)

Ohhh yeah, I oughta put a pic of the New Zealand Tunnel Spider up here! (Peter Jackson's afraid of em... hahaha!)

And bearbugs. Bearbugs are the most AWESOME critters in the world, I swear.

I'll post it in links- I'm pretty sure there's TONS of arachnophobes out there, and I dun wanna be a hypocrite.

Huh? I can't find any pics of bearbugs! WIERD.
