Al Gore?

Just kidding...

What is this fascination with people atributing Al Gore to the creation of the Internet? o_0

Vint Cerf is arguably the father of the Internet, and Sir Tim Berners-Lee was the man behind the World Wide Web.

Al Gore supposedly claimed to have "invented" the internet, sometime early in the Clinton years.

Edit: Decided to do a google search on it because I realized that the above statement is just from casual interations with less than reliable sources. The truth is really muddled, tied up in a whole bunch of politics and finger pointing. Some people say that he actually said that, some people say he said nothing of the sort and it was propoganda from Bush Sr. Others say that the line is fuzzier and Gore deserves credit for promoting the internet and internet friendly legislation. So who really knows?

Didn't the Military invent the "Internet" Sometime in 1940's.

Did Al Gore invent the Internet?
According to a CNN transcript of an interview with Wolf Blitzer, Al Gore said,"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet." Al Gore was not yet in Congress in 1969 when ARPANET started or in 1974 when the term Internet first came into use. Gore was elected to Congress in 1976. In fairness, Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf acknowledge in a paper titled Al Gore and the Internet that Gore has probably done more than any other elected official to support the growth and development of the Internet from the 1970's to the present .

I don't think one specific person invented the internet, it was the colaberation(sp?) of many peoples work...and yes, the daughter of Tim Berners-Lee is the one who goes to my school.

Didn't CERN have one of the first internet-like structures, or is that more Dan Brown propaganda? :roflol:

I think my english teacher went to middle school with some famous rapper-guy in Michigan, but I don't know of my school hosting any famous people. My social studies teacher did teach one of the english teachers (when she was a schoolchild and he was a teacher), though. He's also taught some kids' parents and uncles. Kind of awkward for the current kids (and the parents, too, at parent conference night!), IMHO.

Obviously. However - academics in the field routinelely refer to Cerf as "The Father of the Internet".

Not exactly. Cern is a nuclear research facility beneath the city of Geneva in Switzerland where Sir Tim Berners-Lee created HTML and the blueprints for the World Wide Web in the late 80s early 90s. The Internet itself is a much earlier creation.

It's no big deal... I was tutoring her in English before she went to the Olympics, and I was at the, for lack of a better word, secretive, reception at the airport when she came back from Athens... The strech Hummer she rode back in was AWESOME!!! I got to go inside it, and it rocked!!! It was black with silver lights inside...

I think one of my friends was in that... I think that was where When Zachary Beaver Came to Town was shown... My friend Amanda played Scarlett, along with Johnathon Lipnicki... Another one of my friends is in the show Summerland, though if she doesn't turn some work in to my school, she can't get her work permit renewed, and she cant be on it... Another of my friends was in an indie film being released this Spring... House of the Generals... she had to sing in Russian...

My mom and some of her sibligns went to high school with Lauren Holley. Said she was one of the most stuck up snobs ever...

One of the guys I was in a home school group with, is...I think his name is chris mcdonald...he was in some disney movie with robin williams...anyway this kid is his nephew and my aunt went to college with him.

The lead singer of dresden dolls had the same math teacher as I do

Rachel Dratch from Saturday Night Live had my math teacher too

and I'm sure there are more....my math teacher seems to have had or met all of them when they were kids.

My dad went to the same school as Tim Berners-Lee (a few years ahead i think, but possibly there at hte same time i'm not sure :))

(and psssht, he invented the world wide web not hte internet :) CERN invented the net (i think!))
