There are all sorts of rumors that you'll probably hear, but don't believe them. At least where I live, none of them were true. I'm a senior this year and the thought of leaving makes me miserable, because I am friends with so many younger people and because so many of my senior friends will be going far away to college.
My best advice is to find some sort of a group that does something you enjoy, and join it, and really get involved in it. For me, that's band, but there are plenty of options out there, and if you're not really into spending a lot of time doing extracurricular things, you can always find something that doesn't take so much time.
And enjoy it, because it's your last chance to be a real kid. Many of the friends that you make won't stay friends forever, so enjoy the time you have with them while you're there.

Hmm... Initiation does happen in some schools. People don't care if its against the rules or not. Depends one what schol you go to, but the worst thing that happened at my school was when some snot faced grade 9 told a grade 11 to shove it the first day. Grade 11 made grade 9 shove a nickle down the sidewalk with her tongue and then pop it in her mouth.
Homework depends on your subjects. Math can get pretty nasty in grade 9, same with the english. Not too bad though.

Sorry...I absolutely despised high school. For the first 3 years I was constantly teased and bullied then I changed schools and things were ok other than I was a loner 
But that was my experience im sure things will turn out better for you

Thank you for answering all my questions and giving such great advice.
I do suppose that joining teams and clubs is a great way to make friends. Lucky I'm good a sports I'll try a get on the soccer, basketball, volleyball and possibly the swim team.
As for clubs I haven’t exactly looked at all the clubs for the school. I'll have to look into it and find something I'm good at.
I know I was over stressing with the initiation thing but better to be safe than sorry.

I'm a freshman right now, though I'm probably around your age, as I've skipped some grades... My school is one of those really tiny private schools where everyone knows everyone, and we even have a funky attendance system to make sure no one goes off campus or skips class... It's very exaggerated... Anyway, high school isn't that bad, IMO. All that's different, really is more class choices... and more extracurriculars...

I entered high school knowing virtually no one (I knew two people, but only distantly). As long as you be yourself, you'll make friends because of the sheer variety of people there are in a high school. Even if you have some differences with others, you'd be surprised.
As for the homework load, it's not that bad. I'm in grade 10 (and under the same system as Wolven_Spirits), as long as you resist some of that procrastination and be on top of things, it won't be bad. Hmm...to be honest, coming from a private elementary school, I have to say that I've gotten less and less homework over the past three years. Or maybe it's just because of my working habits, but anywho. If you aren't satisfied with your courses or teachers, make sure to get to your counselor early and try to worm your way into different classes. :P
Make sure to have fun though- high school is (usually) some of the best years of life.

oh, ok *nods* I think we might switch to semesters(like yours) when I'm in grade 12... Might be a good thing, maybe not. I've never had semesters before, only tri-mester system, so I don't know what it's like. I can think of quite a few disadvantages, but some advantages too o.O; heh.

*shrug* I'm in Year 11, so I've been in High School for over 4 years now.
I love it It's really not all that different -- just take my advice and don't ignore your homework toooo much, especially when you get higher up in the year levels =P

My High School years were spent defending myself from the onslaught of people who didn't like female anthro artists. But then again, it was a long time ago, but I'm still feeling the effects. Luckily you Statesiders have better high school rules and whatnot in place
My tips for you:

2. If you're not sure about what you'd like to do - talk with the school's career counsellor. Have an idea of what you want to be before College makes you want to quit it XD

3. Be yourself. Don't try to be cool, popular, preppy or any of the stereotypes people fall into. You're in a league all your own from the second you were born, so don't let people try and turn you into following 'their rules'. You were born unique, so stay unique.

And teachers are picking Honors English people..and I'm one of the people with the highest grades in my english class and one of only a few people who understand things the first time :O
Well I'll be going to highschool with a bunch of rednecks.My cousin is going to be there in 10th but he dont' talk
