I was a dateless wonder in high school, so my best friend took me to prom. It was a little slow, but it was fun. The school rented a hotel lobby for the evening and it was divided into three rooms, as I recall: the first was for photos and caricatures, the middle room was the dance hall (no live band, though; just a DJ), and the last room had been converted to a casino, complete with play money (which unfortunately couldn't be traded in for anything, but we still had fun. I guess).
The most memorable part of the night, by far, was when my friend dragged me up to the karaoke stage with him so we could perform a duet of "My Heart Will Go On."

It turns out I was singing so softly that no one could hear me (even with the mike), so I guess I avoided some embarassment in that respect.
Honestly, the best part of prom season was trying on dresses.

I never dress up for anything, so looking for pretty things was a whole new adventure.
