Just to clarify (since you've said Nanowrimo isn't for you for other reasons, as well) -- while some participants do make some or all of their work public, that is not a requirement (or even a part) of Nanowrimo.

YepThe word count is done by something automatic (you just have to email it to them, or something along those lines, and it counts it - you can even mess up the letters if you want to be cautious), it's never seen by anyone if you don't want it to be.

Nope. All words are yours and yours alone. Novels emailed in at the end of the month for word count verification are deleted, unread, after being verified.

I just estimated because when I type a page, it's usually around 580-ish words.
I got an idea for my story, popped into my head before I was sleeping yesterday =).
