I also say "BRB", but only to geeky people who'll know what it means... and "for the win""oh em gee" and "ORLY??" occasionally too :)

Edit: Come to think of it, I guess I like the ones that you can actually pronounce as word/s (eg. "BRB" = "burrrb"), because it's annoying to have to say the spelled-out ones (eg. "FTW").

I never did understand the whole FTW thing...in fact, i still don't

My seventh grade social studies teacher once told us not to use chatspeak in our essays, because some people had done that. I was just sitting there, completely shocked, thinking of how ashamed I was to be sitting in this room with all these idiots. I'm serious.

Chatspeak in general, in ANY circumstance, makes me cringe. A very small number of phrases are okay in IM, and an even smaller number in forums, but that's it.

Once again, my personal opinion.

its bad enough to have chatspeak online, but its even worse if its being said in real life. i don't mind if its every once and a while, as a joke, or whatever, but it disturbs me when people pronounce chatspeak in real life, much less in formal papers and stuff for school. im a junior in HS and even now, as i like a classmate's papers, im scared at the ammount of chatspeak, lack of spelling, and abundance of errors. as for IM and furoms, i dont care if you dont use a period, or apostrophe, but i do expect you to be able to type an entire word out. is it really that much more time consuming to type "you" instead of "u" or "why" instead of "y"? is it really THAT much more time saving? i dont think so. its rediculous. anyhow, as i feel like im just ranting on and on, i'll stop now and return to catching up on the 800 or so posts made within the last month or so that i missed

Yesh.
I keep saying LOL. In many different forms. "El oh el", "lol" in lollipop, and laugh out loud. "Bee ar bee" and "jay kay" occasionally...oh yeah and "poon" (pwn) too. They just...don't seem to make sense...but I still use it. o.0
I caught my classmate saying lol once. It sounded quite funny..."lemaao"...hahaha.

Edit: How can I forget about ex dee??? XD

Just the LOL one.. LOL seems to be a widely accepted term, even people that don't have Internet will probably heard of it through other people, phones, or some documentary about the ins & outs of teh Intarweb

My friends and I use "jk" when we're being stupid, but other than that, no.

Occasionally, yes. "Lol" and "w00t" are the ones I use the most, probably 5-10 times a day. Every now and then "Omg" gets out of my mouth too, though I tend to use it only when I haven't got anything else to say.

Sun Feb 04, 2007 9:00 pm

Hehe, I have a bad habit of chatspeak slipping out of my mouth in real life. I usually say lawl, roffle and n0*filter indeed*0b when insulting my friend in a teasing manner, but have been known to say omg and brb in social situations seriously. Well, as seriously as I can.

Tue Feb 06, 2007 12:45 am

I'll sometimes say "looool" when I see or hear something quite funny, but not funny enough to make me really laugh.

Even though I don't use "lol" when I'm on the internet. O.o;

Tue Feb 06, 2007 9:32 pm

No. It sounds stupid and I loathe anyone who actually does it.

Fri Feb 09, 2007 6:08 pm

I say lol, zomg, and w00t. :) I've been saying lolol more, too, because of the song Less Than Three by Becky. :)

My dad and I often "lollollollollol" and "rotfl" to eachother.

A lot of my expecially geeky friends use internet speak IRL as a joke, mostly. Like when we're sarcastically laughing at something sort of funny, we'll say "lawl" (the sound of lol) or "roffle" (rhymes with "waffle," the sound of rofl). Sometimes out of habit, I'll say "brb" instead of "be right back" if I'm going to the bathroom or something.

Once, I made a tongue slip and asked one of my friends if another of my friends was "online" instead of "here" - we had a good laugh about that one.

So in short, yes, occasionally, but generally speaking it's pretty much a joke.

edit: "ftw" stands for "for the win," and I think it's at least partially because it's what the heck backwards...but also, it's kind of like saying "yeah, that thing is so great"...If I'm not mistaken, it originated from games where the last move is "for the win" and you always want to try to do something awesome when you're just about to pwn.
