Not necessarily, they're in the process of canonizing Mother Teresa and she died a peaceful death.
I do think that there is a requirement that a certain amount of miracles be arttributed to them during their lifetime. Then they need a certain amount of miracles after they died before they can enter the process. And from what I hear, the process of being made a saint is quite extensive.
gruesome deaths are usually for maryrs, who then become saints.
also to become a saint you need approval from everyone. they're also cannonizing another pope whose name i forgot. from the 20th century.
Pope John Paul was from the 20th century... unless there are popes in other religions...
no i meant the pope before the one that just died or the one before that (names and numbers are not my game)

Pope Leo XIII (25 years)
Pope Pius X (11 years)
Pope Benedict XV (7 years)
Pope Pius XI (17 years)
Pope Pius XII (19 years, 7 months)
Pope John XXIII (4 years, 7 months)
Pope Paul VI (15 years)
Pope John Paul I (33 days)
Pope John Paul II (26 years)
I think that Pope John Paul II should be cannonized, although ti would be a difficult job for the cardinal chosen as devil's advocate.

Any idea why (the bold I quoted)?

Pope Paul VI died in 1978, and John Paul I became pope on August 25th. He died on September 28th, 33 days after he became pope. Some conspiracy theorists believe he was murdered, but since it is tradition for an autopsy not to be carried out on the body, they still don't know.

That's not enough to be canonized.
