I'll start off by telling you some fun stories... and then I'll be asking you for some suggestions. If you dont want to read about previous performances, please scroll down the the bottom section so you could perhaps help with some ideas!

WHAT THE CLUB IS:

Well, I wanted to leave high school with a bang this year, starting new organizations that I would leave being, where people would say "Yeah, Weezel started this back in the day! Remember how cool he was?"

My two things I started were a district-wide Ultimate Frisbee League, and a new Club called the Spontaneous Musical Club!

The idea behind the club: When you watch movies, and people start singing, and the people around that person join in (knowing exactly WHAT to sing).... and the people on the streets happen to have perfectly choreographed music... you wonder "hah. Fun. If only that'd happen in real life." People have always thought the performances that could have the most impact are ones that seem 100% spontaneous, and just make everyday situations come to life. Whatever is going on stops, allows the musical performance to happen, and then let life carry on as it usually would.

I wanted this concept to become a reality, so I've made a team of Techincal Geeks, Members from the Dance Team, people from the Drama Club, actors, band members, and members of the choir.... a well rounded group of individuals who could make all of this happen. Basically, once every couple of months or so, we pre-organize everything so that in a designated location, our month or-so of organizing would turn into a musical that surprises everybody. And because of the fact that they are well organized, they arent just a bunch of stupid kids goofing off that make an arse of themselves. It impresses people.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT HAVE WE DONE SO FAR?

Well, we've had two "performances." The first was created primarily as an example for the rest of the gang, to show how they would normally go off.
It was myself and another guy, breaking into a song to our teacher in front of a very large class, singing "I'll make a man out of you" from the movie Mulan.
(If you can't recall that song, its right here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZSS5dEeMX64)

The original people we recruited for the club were all in viewing sight of the performance, and we had a boombox hidden in a plant where somebody would just hit "play" and it would start instantly. So, when the teacher left the room, I sat on his desk, and my friend sat in his work chair. When he came back in the room, everybody was silent, but of course my friend and i were misplaced, and he said "what are you to up to? Get back in your seats guys..." and basically, we wanted him to whine so we could que ourselves... we said "why? We like sitting here" and hes like "allright get off of my desk, get outta of chair" and we said "okay..." (and got up, and walked toward him" but you need to not whine so much. GIRLS whine.!" and he says "what are you two up to?" (again) and my friend says "Well, Mr. Kroft, we're going to make a man out of you."

The music starts to blast from the speakers, and to contradict his commands, my friend lept up onto his desk and started the song.. "LETS GET DOWN TO BUISNESS! To defeat.. the huns..." and then i backed up toward him... "Did they send me daughters... when i asked... for sons?" and it went on, with coreography, good singing, and lots of entertainment, switching parts respectively, and during the chorus, my friend, a tenor, would sing the "You must be swift as a coarsing river..." and i, a barotone, would sing the "BE A MANNN!"...... and and the final "man... out of YOUUUUUUUUU!" we both slugged him on his two arms and ran out the door... and didnt come back until the next day!

THE NEXT performance had only two "performers" but we had a lot of people from our club in on it. Our school was having a Masquerade Ball for our winter formal, and we had a ceremony to crown our "king and queen of winterfest" in our auditorium. There were 3 princesses and 3 princes on the stage, 2 would be crowned king and queen. Well we got permission to have our people host the show, and after they announced all of the people, they said "And now, the moment you've been waiting for, the crowning of our king and queen of WINTER-" and her mic turned off ,the sound turned off, the lights, OFF. The place was black and EVERYBODY - FREAKED-OUT. This was planned.

Next thing you hear is the booming sound of the beginning of the Phantom of the Opera theme song, and I, in a full professional phantom of the opera costume, screamed in deep dark laughter from the lightbooth, and everybody was scared... right during the "DUNN... dun dun dun dun dunnnnnn...."
The phantom of the opera theme song, for reference, can be seen here:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ej1zMxbhOO0
So, our light person hit the spotlight centerstage, and a girl in a huge white wedding gown stepped slowly into the spotlight, and started to sing the song... "In sleep he saaang to me... in dreams he came..." and I tossed a rope down from the lightbooth, climbed down it, and ran down the aisle , reaching for her ever so slowly....

we did the duet, and during a huge music break (the 4th, often unheard verse) we grabbed all of the royalty, brought them center stage, and I ran in front of them and held my cape open as wide as possible (it was a huge phantom cape) and my partner organzied them in a row behind me, and crowned the king and the queen) and i flashed my cape away, and there stood in the spotlight the king and the queen, crowned, (A fun way to crown them with a surprise) and the other royalty at there sides... we than sung our way offstage, and the lights went back on... and everybody basically did a "what the heck just happened.... that.. was ...totally... FRICKING COOL!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHERE I'll NEED HELP.

Heh, it was pretty amazing... full costumes, full orchestra sound.... and left everybody stunned with the "i cant believe... that just happened. here. now" type of thing.

Now I'm looking for ideas for one final... big... huge production. I'm looking for a song that would be appropriate to spontaneously start performing in a school situation, with a large crowd... that means not just a cool song like "hey ya" but a song that tells a story, or has meaning. Also, one that has a few singers, or back up singers, something that people can easily dance too, and could be started with a regular conversation....
It could be in a lunch room.... library.... hallway.... pepfest.... anywhere.... as long as there could be lots of people to witness it, and we could start it off... like... basically, two people in a lunch room could start a huge scene by talking...a guy and a girl, and if a girl took her top shirt off and threw it across the lunch room... and I'd say "baby, what on EARTH are you doing?"... she could leap up onto the table as the music starts to play... with "I'm telling you to LOOSEN UP MY BUTTONS BABE (uh-huh!) .. the girls around could leap up on their chairs to do the back-up.. etc etc. thats just a mere example. any help or suggestions? Or comments about what ive previously done? I think its pretty creative and its worked out really well so far!
(A couple pics of my costume.... not the performance, but just showing... we had EVERYTHING down perfect!)

Two of the music numbers of High School Musical are pretty good 'group' songs, 'We're All In This Together' and 'Stick to the Status Quo'.

That, OR....

'RENT' or 'La Vie Boheme' from Rent... Or even 'Dancing Through Life' from Wicked....

Even 'Be Our Guest' from Beauty and the Beast (Our school did it this past fall, and even though I'm sick of it, I'm so addicted.)

I know... I'm a musical freak xD

I agree with all of that: especially the music in Rent.

I suggest "The Time Warp" from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. There are a lot of things you could do in relation to that--for instance, you could have the criminologist's diagram, and try to get just random people to dance along...some parts(mostly just the pelvic thrust) might be considered a bit "suggestive," but it's really more comical than anything else.

The Time Warp would be the perfect song for the way out, and is easy for the audience to get into as well :P

And about this project... all I have to say is WOW.
.... yeah, WOW. :o

I'm definetely not doing anything from Rent....

im not looking for popular songs that could be bent or twisted to appear in everyday situations... but a song that perhaps... could start up spontaneously, not "out of nowhere" as in nobody knows why its going on, but a scene that could lead up to it, or a a situation or area where it would make sense.

Now, im not saying i cant do a song thats popular... but as for an example, what would la vie boheme have anything to do with anything at a school?

Be our guest, another popular song, but would have nothing to do with anything really.... think of the lyrics and the context.... I dont know how that could be incorporated into anything.....

You are on the right track though, as an example of an appropriate rent song could be "Sante Fe".... where somebody could have the argument that the school food sucks, and if only we had a resturerant with good food, and allow somebody to suggest it openly... and let it evolve slowly into song! Back up singing, etc, etc... thats a fine example there.

Time warp... possibly appropriate. I'll definetely consider that one.
While that may not be applicable in the hallways or an office or something, it ISNT stuck to anything in particular. Its not about a revolution, its not about peforming dinnerwear in france.. its about... a dance. The concept of a dance could be easily brought up in any given place. So that would work. It doesnt relate to a school topic, but it doesnt have a topic that weights the song down into a very specific situation.

How about "I need a Hero?" It's quite easy to work that into a school situation and there are backing parts as well as the lead.
