Final Fantasy VI

Thu Nov 23, 2006 6:31 pm

Has anyone else here played this awesome, incredible gem? It was released on the SNES as FF III and for PS1 as part of Final Fantasy Anthology. In every way it's superior to the rest of the series...

the graphics are absolutely stunning. The fact that it's not 3D doesn't take away from the visual effect AT ALL. It was actually the first game to use the SNES's 256 color capability.

And don't even get me started on the awesomeness of the plot.

OMGOMGOMG OO:

I love this game *so* much, it's my favorite Final Fantasy game. Evar. (And probably my actual favorite game.)

Funny you mention the game - I just learned to play its first overworld theme by ear. Anyway, it was my favorite RPG of all time already, but this thread, which explores the nuances of the Japanese, complete with all the censorship and mistranslation, makes it a thing of true wonder. (The scene right before the final battle is particularly improved.)

Anyway, I adore anything with vivid images and the sorts of themes FF6 has by the crate, and combine that with the characters and a great many of Nobuo's finest pieces, and you have yourself one heck of a game. If only it had some memorable pithy quotes...

I played it for Playstation, but my memory card got wiped when I was a fairly good ways through it. I didn't feel like restarting, and gave up on it.

However, with its impending release for Gameboy Advance (with improvements & new characters), I think I may pick up the new one.

New characters? Surely not player characters, given that there were already fourteen?

Actually, I'm really struggling to imagine where they could fit in new characters, period. Some follow-up on the Returners proper (i.e. Banon, Arvis, weird R.A.F. hats) after the Thamasa incident, sure - maybe individualize character designs - but brand-new characters?

I suppose they could extend the Ancient Castle flashback, but that's about the best I can do.

Ya know, I'd love it if you could make Banon a permanent member of your party. Healing goodness.

Or perhaps an actual Esper, on your team. That would totally rock.

On my first play, I was so convinced that an Esper would join my party at some point - the Phoenix Cave was a particular disappointment on that score, between the music, the puzzles and the name (not to discount the Rachel subplot, mind) - but I've been so inoculated to the idea that Esper = death wish that I didn't even consider the option.

Tritoch would work pretty smoothly as a party member, come to that. But given the WoR introduction, it kind of takes the spotlight off Terra.

...maybe you could free him after Terra's little episode at Narshe? Given that he's been in stasis since the War of the Magi, it doesn't interfere with Terra's journey of discovery.

Ah, but wouldn't Tritoch then be natural for the Crescent Island mission? They'd better come up with some way around that, because taking some spotlight off Terra is acceptable, but not Leo, dammit.

Dude, that would be cool. And Banon, too, even if I'm writing totally incompatible fanfic on him right now.
