How do you put a shadow or a border around non-pixel text?

For instance in my sig, there is a shadow to the bottom right of the letters. Mine are just plain black and white, but others also use colors in the rest of the sig. (I use GIMP, so instructions need to be compatible with that program.)

I'm praying that you gys don't tell me that the only way to do it is manually...

I'm finally back for the summer, although hopefully I'll spend a little more time away from this screen.

Dunno if this works on GIMP but...

Border: Blending Options -> Stroke

Shadow: Blending Options -> Drop Shadow

Thanks, that wasn't exactly what I needed to do. But stroke was the key word, I found it under edit. Thanks a ton!
