Okay, I opened up photoshop yesterday to make a graphic for a school project, and it wouldn't let me use color. Black and white work fine (obviously) but when I select a color it shows up as this really ugly grey.

I'm not by any means overly familiar with photoshop, but I've checked everything I can think of and I can't even find why it's doing that, much less how to fix it.

Help!

I'm not sure if this is the case, but sometimes when you create a new image it automatically puts the mode to "Grayscale". Just create a new image and change the mode to RGB color.

Try setting your image mode to something other than 'Greyscale'

In PS Elements, it's Image>Mode>RBG Color or something like that...dunno if it's the same for you though...

When you open a new file, there should be a thingie that says "Mode" and a dropdown menu. Change it from Greyscale to RGB Color.

Happens to me often. ^_^;;

If you've already started working and don't want to start over, simply go to image > mode > RGB whatever. It works on Photoshop of any version, not just Elements.

If you know it's set to RGB, and it's still looking like that, I'd save whatever you were doing and restart your computer. Often times with Photofiltre and Paint on my computer, the blues and greens will come out in really ugly colors, but the reds and oranges are fine.

Grayscale matches with red and white, though.

Also, since you want a color, but you stuck with grayscale, change it to duotone and select the color, depending of what image you're using. After you choose the right color for your image, save it, then re-open, and change the mode into RGB, so you can select the color for the text, or maybe you can add some background on it, then "merge" it together with the image.
