Neopets.com has over-stepped their powers.

Thu Jun 10, 2004 2:00 pm

Hello. I am pikachukid25. Some of you many know me. I have been here before, and just recently returned. My real name is Matthew Francis Stoner. That's right. Stoner. I am not here to let you make fun of this; I am here to show how Neopets has stopped me from useing my real name. I cannot put "Stoner" as my real last name. No. I must give a lie. I feel that most sites on the internet over-step their power by using filters to stop certain words. I am not a bad person. I do not use my name for any othe purpose that to say who I am. And I cannot be who I am at Neopets.com. I know most of you will just laugh at this, but I feel sorry that Neopets feel my last name is so evil. I know this is not intentional, but I would like to use my real name. I will still use Neopets, but will do so with a saddened heart. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Matthew Francis Stoner

You're definitely right, it's wrong to do that.
It seems that anything that could be considered slightly questionable is erased.
You aren't the first to be wronged, and you certainly won't be the last.
Half the "Freezings" that go on are done so with little investigation.
Obviously it's unfair, but there's little you can do about it.
I for one would be thankful that some of the less intelligent members of that site didn't get mad and have you frozen for doing things that you didn't do.
Believe me, worse things go on at that site than this.

Strange... that you bring this up.
There was a boy in my high school... who was running for school pres. His last name was Stoner as well. This guys posters said "Stoner for Pres" And the principal kicked him out of the election.
It's not just neopets.
One day, I couldn't put "crombie" in my pets name. Now being me, and being blank, I don't know if that does stand for anything bad (please don't tell me if it does). Unfortunately... Neo does have to cover their toosh with things like this. If they let everyone use a name they wanted... there would be a whole lot of angry parents.
I know your reasoning is legitimate, and it is sad that you have to lie. If it were me, i'd just use my First and Middle name. And just ignore my last.
*shrugs*

I say deal with it. Neopets can NOT micromanage. Maybe if it had a staff the size of a real world government it could, but not as a website it can't.

There are indeed some things that can be a bit ridiculous, i'm not disagreeing there... I'd love to be able to live blissfully without people questioning my own internet name, Nword. Lots of people ask about it meaning the n word.

Unfortunately, and i'd bet money on it if i weren't so possessive of my money, TNT will never change its policy unless the world changes its policy first.

Now i'm gonna shush myself before i get attacked too much.

I feel for you, Matthew. I would feel bad if I couldn't use my real name.

But it's not just Neopets. I remember a while back on PPT when I was trying to write something about the popular 60's show called the "Smurf" Van Dyke show. I couldn't use Mr. VanDyke's first name (which rhymes with Rick and begins with the letter D) to save my soul--it kept changing to smurf.

So, imagine all the guys out in the real world who have that same first name but can't say them on PPT (and my guess, Neopets as well). Unfortunately, it is the society in which we live that dictates this.

Still and all, it is not fair.

EDIT: And, one more thing, Matthew, having the last name of Morningstar myself, I would never, ever think to make fun of your last name. I have had more people poke fun at my name than you can imagine--Moonbeam, Starstruck, Morningstarski, Starbaby--the list goes on and on. So, hold your head high. It could be a lot worse, you know, I once had a substitute teacher in grade school named, honest to God, Mr. Pickle.

I'm assuming you're under 18, so you shouldn't be putting you full name online anyway.

heres an idea, get an actual morningstar and threaten em with that (a morningstar is a heavy, spiked bludeon on a long stick -similar to a mace infact)
i too got teased for my name (philip, stupid things they used to get to me, dolphin for crying out loud 0_o )

Too bad I don't have one of those hanging around the house, eh? Because that weapon is old English, my family actually thought for a time that our name was English--however, it's been determined to have come from Germany--Morgenstern in German--and changed to Morningstar when the family moved to Canada in the early 1800's. Still better than Pickle, I'd say.

Though I agree with you, Matthew, that it's a silly and annoying restriction, I also agree in part with Istanbullfrog:

I see no need to put my full name on Neopets either, and I'm rapidly approaching 2-1/2 times the age of majority.

I do wonder, though, how many people look at my Neo profile & really believe that my first name is 'Will' and my last name is 'Nottell.'

Name: Will not tell. Seems like a good policy to me.

I can see where they're coming from, but I can also see that it's a bit unfair. :(

And, just to cheer you up...I've got a substitute teacher called Miss.Turtle. Who thinks she has bags of style. Yeah.

That is one of the most rediculous things I have heard. Talk about last name discrimination ¬_¬

Hmm, I don't know what crombie means either...

I'm wondering if even PPT will block this one. It's a genuine last name. Heck, there was even a famous general with this last name, if I remember right. Anyhow, I knew someone with the last name Hooker. I kid you not. Boy, did she ever get teased something fierce. She took her husband's name when she got married.

I can definitely understand why you'd be upset. I tend to not use my real name online, I like to confuse myself with as many aliases as I can.

I just looked up "Crombie" on urbandictionary......and it is bad.

Reminds me the time we're discussing music at my guild. Being a Blues fan, I tried to write that I really like the singer John Lee Hooker.
Guess what? They would not accept his name, either.
