did anyone know that the p in pteri is silent?

Mon Jun 14, 2004 4:07 pm

I didn't until I looked at the pronuciation thing. I had always said it p-teri.

Mon Jun 14, 2004 4:07 pm

i always said it as in 'petry', and probably always will.

Yes, if you see a pt at least in English the p is silent. I think they are trying to model the pteri after the pterodactyl.

Mon Jun 14, 2004 4:13 pm

Um, yeah o_O? It's like Pterodactyl and Pteranodon.

Mon Jun 14, 2004 4:21 pm

Cool, i always called it that too. didn't know that.

I pronounce it, Pa-Terry.

I knew that, but I still pronounce it Pee-Tree.

Stupid Pteri or Petri from Land Before Time made me end up calling it that :P

Pteri? I personally never had a problem with it. Its like Pterodactyl....athough I do remember having to be corrected several times on that pronunciation in 3rd grade...
But while we're talking about mispronouncing neopet names, I might as well say I've always had a problem with eyrie and mynci. Eyrie is always Eye-ree and Mynci is always Min-see. I've never bothered correcting myself :P

I knew about Pteri pronunciation, and I also always say Min-see because Mwnci just sounds icky. But the one that really surprised me is the way they say Illusen on the pronunciation page - I always said it Ill-oo-sen but she says it more like Ill-uh-sen or Ill-ih-sen.. have a listen!

WOW! All these different pronunciations are making my head spin!!

i never had problems with pteri, because i assumed it was just like pteridactly because pteris are actually supposed to be from tyrannia *and thats why they have a pteridactyl tail* but assumtions made me mess up on other pronounciations..

like elephante... i always thought it was "ele-fant-ay"... but its really juts pronounced "elephant" like the real animal... but i thought that would be dumb... they dont call lupes "doggs" and quiggles "froggs" or something... i didnt think they would name the pet after the real animal, so i thought they gave it a twist with a "ay" at the end... i still say it like that... and i guess they did name kaus after cows anyway...

another one i still say is "ay-sha"... its supposed to be like "eye-sha" but i until i saw it on a commericial, i thought it was ay-sha....

aaand what else... *im really bad at these pronounciations..* oh yes, the grarrl... the r's are supposed to be silent, and its pronounced "grahl" which is REALLY wierd i think....

i too, always pronounced mynci like "min-see" and techo as "tea-coh" but i guess its "teh-coh"... man, good thing i only have to type their names.. i never say them in real life because i dont have any friends who play neopets... i guess thats a good thing now :)

pteri I've always pronounced as ter-ee; aisha for me is eye E sha (emphasis on the E in the middle -- it always looked/sounded almost Egyptian to me); elephante is ele-phont (think font with a soft f); grarrl is kind of like growhl; mynci I've never been sure, I use min-see or mine-see

I pronounced Mynci always as Myn-Chi. Don't ask why, I basically saw what I wanted to see and I never noticed there wasn't any H in the word--or I never really cared.

Grarrl is pronounced by me as Gra-Al. Yes, it's weird but that's just the way my mind works.

I don't care what anyone says! I shall forever refer to the Pteri as Pet-tree!
