Anime Versus (Week 3)

Wed Nov 09, 2005 11:29 pm

Greetings, and welcome to Anime Versus. Like it's predecessors, Anime Versus will pit two competitors against each other each week, to see which one PPTers prefer. The winner of the week will move onto the next round, and will face a new challenger anime. Should an anime win for six weeks straight, it will be removed from the competition and placed into the Anime Hall of Fame.

Last week, Cowboy Bebop defeated Ranma 1/2 by eight votes. This week, it will face a new anime.

Series Information:

Cowboy Bebop is another action-comedy and was produced by Bandai Visual/Sunrise. It's Japanese run was from 4/3/1998 to 4/23/1999 (26 episodes).* It has also frequently been shown on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim in the United States.

In Cowboy Bebop, the viewer follows the adventures of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, a little girl named Ed, and of course, the dog Ein, as they move through the solar system working as bounty hunters. While many anime seem to follow a linear movement, Cowboy Bebop is much more episodic, often with the previous episode having nothing to do with the one that follows. However, there is a main plot, and that is looking at Spike's past, which while never entirely into focus, deals mostly with betrayal and a lost love.

Ayashi no Ceres (a.k.a. Ceres: The Celestial Legend) is a romantic action-drama produced by Studio Pierrot which aired in Japan from 4/20/00 to 9/28/00 (24 episodes).*

Mikage Aya and her twin brother Aki were just ordinary teenagers. Or least so they thought until they went to celebrate their 16th birthday and the Mikage family attempted to murder Aya. This anime, based on the manga by Watase Yuu, follows Aya as she attempts to unravel the mystery behind the Mikage family and the celestial maiden who wishes to seek her revenge upon the family responsible for her suffering

I actually haven't seen either of them, but because I really hate the art of Cowboy Bebop, I will vote Ayashi no Ceres. And also because that guy on the left sort of looks good XD. And the story sounds interesting =).

Can you put They Guyver in, in the future? I'm interested to see how that would fare against some of the others

I'll add it to my full list, since it's one I didn't already have on it. It might be a bit before I get to it, but I will put it into the competition at some point.

Which version are you talking about specifically though? The OAV (Guyver), the actual TV show (Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor), or the movie (Guyver: Out of Control)?

I guess the actual TV show is as good as any.
I've not seen that movie, but I've seen Guyver - Dark Hero, the live action film which was really cheesy, but still good

I would still have to go with Cowboy Bebop

The voting has ended. Cowboy Bebop and Ayashi no Ceres tie with six votes apiece. After flipping a coin, I have arbitrarily chose Ceres to advance to the next competition. Cowboy Bebop will be readmitted to the competition in a few weeks. The tie will count as a victory for each competitor, which means that when Cowboy Bebop returns, it will only need three victories to be retired to the Anime Hall of Fame.

Thanks for voting everyone, the next competition will be up shortly.
