[Please LOCK] Anime Versus (Week 9)

Wed Dec 21, 2005 11:36 pm

Greetings, and welcome to Anime Versus. Like it's predecessors, Anime Versus will pit two competitors against each other each week, to see which one PPTers prefer. To vote, please select the anime you like best from the poll at the top of this topic, then feel free to discuss your choice below. The winner of the week will move onto the next round, and will face a new challenger anime. Should an anime win for six weeks straight, it will be removed from the competition and placed into the Anime Hall of Fame.

Last week, Fullmetal Alchemist defeated Serial Experiments: Lain by eight votes. With that victory, it is now one win away from the Anime Hall of Fame. Today, Cowboy Bebop will return to Anime Versus. It was briefly removed from competition due to a tie with Ayashi no Ceres during Week 3.

Series Information:

Fullmetal Alchemist (a.k.a Hagane no Renkinjutsushi) is an adventure drama produced by Bones, Aniplex, Square-Enix and Mainichi Broadcasting. Its 51 episodes ran from October 2003 to October 2004.* It is also currently being run as a part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim line-up in the United States.

Full Metal Alchemist is the story of two brothers who are gifted alchemists. When their mother dies, they decide to use their powers to restore her to life, violating the taboo against human transmutation. They pay a terrible price for their mistake. Edward, the elder brother, is left with a mechanical arm and leg, while Alphonse, the younger of the two, finds his soul bound to an empty suit of armor. The story follows their quest for the Philosohper's Stone, a legendary material with the power to restore their bodies.***

Cowboy Bebop is a action-comedy anime and was produced by Bandai Visual/Sunrise. It's Japanese run was from 4/3/1998 to 4/23/1999 (26 episodes).* It has also frequently been shown on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim in the United States.

In Cowboy Bebop, the viewer follows the adventures of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, a little girl named Ed, and of course, the dog Ein, as they move through the solar system working as bounty hunters. While many anime seem to follow a linear movement, Cowboy Bebop is much more episodic, often with the previous episode having nothing to do with the one that follows. However, there is a main plot, and that is looking at Spike's past, which while never entirely into focus, deals mostly with betrayal and a lost love.

It's a hard decision since I like both anime, but I would say Cowboy Bebop (but you can't really compare them.) FMA does have quite a few flaws that really keep me from making it high up on my list.

I prefer Cowboy Bebop, like I said before, there is little that can beat the thing from the fridge and the stairway to nowhere.

This is a really tough choice. I love both of these shows so much. :( I went with FMA though because I really love the characters and the storyline. Although Cowboy Bebop comes very close.
