Funnily enough, C. S. Lewis (author of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) was friends with Tolkien (author of the LOTR)! They were influenced by similar things, but I don't think they ripped off each other's work ;)

(Edit: Sorry, this was already mentioned. I missed reading some replies!)

I found this quite interesting (from here):
J.R.R. Tolkien in particular criticized Lewis's first Narnia book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. He thought that there were too many elements that clashed—a Father Christmas and an evil witch, talking animals and children.

And yeah, I'm really looking forward to this movie. I loved the books and old tv series when I was younger, and the fact that the same SFX people as those for the LOTR are working on it means that its going to look awesome, hopefully! :)

ofcourse they will destroy it.
its a classic book with a massive fanbase, that is unfortunetly steeped in the groups known as "small children who wont mind" and "geeks"
look at lord of the rings.
The war of the worlds.
Dawn of the Dead. (oh how the remake sucks. you can see the cameramen for crying out loud! :x )
and innumberable remakes that i dont care to mention.

it is doomed to suck from the right-off, maybe ive just grown bitter over the years (well. yes i have) but remakes should be renamed to:
Film tiltle here: teh suxxorz!
just to show how bad it will be before i wast another fiver on a ticket to sit through two hours where my mind dribbles out my ears.

*wanders off rambling incoherantly about how the geeks shall one day inherit the world and the unbelievers cast before lord Setekh for pennance*
