I'm very excited about this movie... when I first say the trailer while waiting for Must Love Dogs to start I kept thinking... what is this... oh my God this is rent! Is this rent? Rent Rent Rent Rent Rent. And then it was Rent. :D

However I must confess I don't know what the storyline is. Anyone wanna help a non-theater geek get a clue? XP

Haha, I saw it like a week ago. :P Living in L.A. is funnn....
(Well, living in L.A. and knowing people who know people.)

I really enjoyed it; the songs and acting were great and the cinematography was gorgeous - and yes, I cried a bit. Shh.

Then again, I don't know anything about the original play, so I didn't have the same expectations going in that I know a lot of other people might have.

a person who knows nothing about the original play really cant experience this to the full extend... you can enjoy it... like Starchaser Im sure enjoyed it, but to you guys its just a story with neat music and funny dancing.... with great morals to it.

But my god.... this was life changing for me. Wow. Ughhhh... i am so speechless right now. There is no way they could have done this any better. I feel bad for people who havent gotten to experience it on stage first, much much less listening to the CD or something first....

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THE STORYLINE>> THIS WILL HELP YOU OUT.

BUT WARNING. HERE ARE SPOILERS. THIS IS THE PLOT. ITS KIND OF PREDICTABLE, BUT YOU MAY WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS AHEAD OF TIME SO YOU APPRICIATE IT MORE:

SPOILERS START HERE:
Basically, theres a guy Roger, who fell madly in love with music and a girlfriend April, but they get aids and the girlfriend kills herself. All he has now is his music.

Then theres a guy named Mark. Hes a big nerd. He's into filming and multimedia, and his girlfriend, Maureen, dumped him for a GIRL.... named Joanne. All he has is his filming about life in New York.

These two guys are trying to live together in an appartment where they CANT pay the rent, and the landlord is the ex-bestfriend Benny, who lets them slide a bit ONLY because they used to be friends. Hes trying to evict the place so he can start a digital interactive studio....

Roger falls in love with the girl downstairs, Mimi, but casts her away because of the bad girl she is, obsessed with drugs and shes a dancer, and mark takes her back and leaves her and just when she needs him most, the only person there for her... is Benny. So she falls in love with the Enemy.

Tom Collins appears, who was a past roomate to Mark and Roger, who is into computer-age technology. He gets mugged, but a boy/turned into a girl named Angel helps him out and they fall in love. They both have aids.

Maureen is a performer, and starts a protest against benny's evictions and the creation of the multimedia center... and Joanne is kind of her stage manager. Mark tapes the whole protest, and gets a gig with a local company, also using Joanne as his manager. Mark is stuck in the middle whlie Maureen and Joanne go on and off with their relationship. They get engaged, then break up, and in the end are in love again. (Maureen and Joanne)

The Majority of them have been going to life support meetings because of the whole AIDS thing.... but slowly, people start dying of aids in this group. It becomes very emotional... and its a big turning point, because Angel also becomes very sick, and then dies. The love Angel had is gone and the group breaks apart. Angel is dead. Tom Collins is left in the middle of everybody arguing, Mark leaves for Sante Fe to develop his music skills, and finally right that ONE great song before he dies. (cuz hes got aids.) Mark continues on to work for this company with more gigs, and tries make progress on his own personal documentary. Mimi continues using, and since mark finally leaves her behind, she leaves with Benny. Joanne and Maureen and ticked at each other and break up... Benny pays for Mimis rehab sessions to get her off the crap..

Then another huge turning point happens. Mimi is gone, and is feared for the worst. After finding his song, Roger returns home relizing how much he misses Mimi, and that she was his song all along, and needs to tell her so... even though she carries so much baggage, he realises he does to. Mark gets angry and quits the gigs to work on his own movie hes finishing, and helps look for Mimi. Benny fears she started using again, and broke the rehab, and shes nowhere to be found. Tom cant find her, Joanne and Maureen work together to find her but fail.

Finally, Roger is in Mimis apartment below his own... and he heres a scream... Joanne and Maureen found Mimi nearly dead in the park, and she asked to see roger disbite how angry they were at each other. They bring her upstairs....

Mimi is in Rogers arms, as she starts to die, they tell each other about the baggage they carry, and Roger tells her that he found out she was his song, and wants to have her anyway.... as he finishes his song.... Mimi fianlly dies in his arms.

Then.... out of nowhere, she twitches, and sits up. Her fever starts to pass. Apparently, she was heading for a a warm bright light, and she saw Angel. And Angel looked gooood. And Angel said "go back girl, its not your time. You need to go hear that boy's song!!""

So, Mimi and Roger are in love, Maureen and Joanne fall back in love, Roger has his song finally made, and Mark finally made his movie/documentary. With his amazing computer skills, Tom Collins rewires an ATM to give some certain poor people, including themselves, some money, whenever they type in the password... A-N-G-E-L.... and then they can pay their rent so benny is kind of screwed and cant evict them.

SPOILERS ARE OVER. THE END.

great story, huh? Now you just need to hear the music... but while i told you the story, im not singing you the music.

THIS FILM IS AMAZING. im going to go see it at least 10 times in the next week. wow.

Aside from the people talking about it here, I haven't heard anything about Rent coming out. Not one single trailer, not a single review (not even online), not even a friend mentioning they want to see it. Which is surprising, since I know my friend Katie loved the theatre version.

I doubt I'll be seeing this, at least not in the cinema. I used to love musical theatre, but I usually don't like movie musicals nearly so well. I just prefer the feeling of something live. The movies can be kind of fun, but not quite $10 worth of fun. Hopefully, someone will actually be performing it near me in the not-too-distant future and the tickets won't be too bad so I can go see the real thing instead.

Yesyesyesyes! My mum has expressly forbidden me to see it tonight (opening night!) even though I already have tickets...ha, right. I'm dead-set on sneaking out for it.

oh, it most certainly is! The guy who wrote it actually INTENDED for it to become a movie... its not just a "10 year old musical who they decided to turn into a movie all of a sudden"... critics should learn their topics before they talk about them.... this is extremely well done. It FEELS live... i just get so into it.... see it. SEE IT IN THEATERS! SEE IT NOOOOOW!

I saw the musical last year and it moved me soo much even thought we have cheap seat and the sound was horriable..I cant wait to see it in movie form. and I plan on so day going to New York and seeing it on Broadway. Oh and it won a Pulitzer Prize for drama I think in 96 or 97.

my lone goal was to not cry like a blubbering little school girl.

I succeeded... just barely.

I've noticed a lot of people said it was a bit awkward between songs transition, is there any merit to these claims? Like...just people standing around smiling?
