The horrible, lazy admin known as Naniwai finally got around to installing the birthday hack on her forum a couple weeks ago. She has EasyMOD and found installation rather... well... easy. She thinks the mod is unobtrusive, simple, and nice to have. She wonders if it would be possible to have it on PPT, to make it easier to remember birthdays and honour those of the newbies who may not have a friend here to make them a birthday topic. She completely understands if the admins either have a good reason for not wanting the mod, or are, like Nani, too lazy to install it. But in any case, she'd highly recommend it.

She also wonders why she typed that entire post in the third person. :P

So does she. *points to herself*

I think it'd be a great idea, but I'm not a admin. :D

This did come up before (so you're not alone), but has been dismissed.

When you have a forum like this one, there are simply too many birthday collisions (multiple people having the same birthday). In the end, you'll end up with a list of 10+ people who have their birthday today, and 250+ people who have their birthday this month (hardly pratical).
It's been argued that it would lead to an increase in misc disc spam ("Happy Birthday Joe. You only have 1 post, but I love you anyway") or impersonal topics ("Happy birthday to everyone who was born on June 17th").

People usually get away with saying "My birthday is in three days/weeks/months" in their signatures.

Would you rather have a person make you a birthday thread because they know you and care about you and want to wish you a happy birthday, or because they just saw your name on a list, don't even know who you are, and just want to up their post count?
I personally hate birthday threads. When it's my birthday, I prefer to have people come and tell me in person (or PM, or IM or whatever) instead of making or posting on a thread for me. I also don't like it when people that barely know me go and post on a birthday thread for me. Bleh.
I really would hate the birthday hack. And if for some reason we were to get it, it would have to be optional to put yourself on the birthday list. Because I know I wouldn't want my birthday listed, and I'm sure there are others that feel the same way.

You don't have to enter your birthday. There is an option to make it required, but we wouldn't have to use it. Hunter, at least on my forum, it's organised by week and not by month, but I think that can also be changed.

In all honesty, I don't think people would make topics for users they didn't know personally. If it's been tried, however, I'm going to go ahead and believe you guys. Saph, I'm with you - the birthday topics seem cluttering. Maybe they should be relegated to NNV.

I totally disagree with the NNV comment. I think it seems just a bit wrong and even more than a bit rude to shove "Happy Birthday to My Best Friend Ever" or the like in with the spam. Yeah, good way to show you care.

Dawn, can we please not bring personal grudges into unrelated PPT topics?

...How the hell was that a personal grudge? I dislike the idea immensely, and opinions are apparently wanted here. If you have more bones to pick with me, take it to PM or IM. But none of that belongs here and I won't take part in it on a public forum.

Your sarcasm and this post are way out of line. Nani, although you were polite, please don't even mention personal grudges here, as they pique the interest of those nosy ones among us who otherwise aren't involved, and they encourage replies like this. Both of you cut it out. Now.

...And I think after that it's best to end the subject here.
