Well I just got my weekly Time Magazine...

Has an article in it about the tons of child advertising that exist.

Some key points that I'll highlight:

Annual Revenue is over $15 million
Dutch is indeed the next language.
330 NP is a lot.
11 Million users, 39% under age 13.
Users average 3.5 hours a month on the site. (i'm hoping they mean per week)
Critics consider Immersive Advertising a crime... (critics=nutcases)
Less than 1% of the site is branded content (ignoring Neopet branded of course )
McDonalds = big source of income for neopet players... lol.

That's a good summary, and takes all of the statistics that were mentioned.

Though what would be a "furry green creature with four legs and a pair of wings"?

The article was mainly about the question of how early is too early for the huge amount of advertising that is geared towards little kids.

At least they didn't mispell the names of pets that they did mention... lol.

actually, it might be an elephante. these statistics are basically negative against neopets.

The only real bad part about it is the misinterpretations that the media always displays when you see an article about Neopets...

I read that article. Basically, it's a poorly veilled attack against immersive advertising.

Their revenue is a lot then, is that profit or before everything is taken out?

I am not bothered whatsoever by the advertising on Neopets. For the most part, I am unaware that it's even there - and I don't go out and buy loads of neopet goods, so it's not like it's subliminal.

I figure if I want to keep playing for free, I need to cope with the small amount of advertising that is actually there - and that is very doable for me.

well, first of all it stating that it is almost impossible to sucessful on neopets. 350np is alot???

Why does it say that 39% are under thirteen?? Do they want the readers to think that neopets might have adult rated stuff on there??

You mean it ISN'T impossible? I dunno, it's pretty hard for me to get any income, unless I spend 6+ hours playing games. I know it's not (too) hard for restockers to be successful, but for the average flash-gamer, it's not a walk in the park or anything. And anything really expensive or rare (*cough*mycovetedpiratepaintbrush*cough*) is pretty definitely out of my reach. *shrugh*



Not at all. According to the article, companies have started increasing marketing to children 13 and younger because it's more lucrative than other types of advertising. "$600 billion in family spending that children under 13 are said to influence, along with $40 billion in pocket money that they spend on purchases from candy to clothes, an amount projected to hit nearly $52 billion in 2008" and so on.

What i'm trying to say is that to parents that don't play neopets, this might be negative info. and they will stop their children from playing it.

Poorly veiled? Jeez, it wasn't veiled at all! I mean, the headline is, "Is children's marketing going too far?" Can't believe neopets would think this was positive publicity.

Yeesh, I don't know about the critics, but I certainly prefer immerse advertising over two huge popups slowing down my computer on every page.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with children advertisements at all. it gives us more power.

Yes, me too. It's unobtrusive and I don't have to worry about it causing problems with my computer. And it's not like we can expect TNT to get rid of advertising period, otherwise we'd have to pay for the site. Playing a few sponsor games is a small price to pay for keeping the site free.
