On AIM, I can tolerate any kind of chatspeak that doesn't require me to consciously translate into English. For example, the following things are OK in my book: lol, omg, skool, IMO, brb. (This only applies to instant messaging/chat rooms; I tend to be less tolerant on messageboards.)

If I actually have to make an effort to understand them, then I will, more often than not, ignore the speaker altogether. If you cannot be bothered to make your sentences even semi-coherent, then you can't rightly expect other people to be bothered to read whatever it is you wrote. Communication is a reciprocal relationship.

Its funny if someone older than me is using chatspeak, I find it funny that some adults use chatspeak too. Whenever someone uses chatspeak, it makes them seem like a three year old.

I'm a little bit weird on chatspeak.

I don't mind 1337speak or any variation of using numbers to visually represent letters combined with creative phonetic representations of sounds in typing. I can read it in small doses and think of large chunks as puzzles.

However, it does affect when people type "you" as "u" or "What's up" as "wsup" and confuse your/you're or their/they're/there. It affects the stuffing out of me, actually.

I think the weirdities have more to do with how I feel about the people who use them, actually. And of course, they don't apply to PPT. Very few (if any) type like "hey wsup hows lyf."

It's annoying to me, but I deal with it. For some people, it's all they can type quickly and if that is what they wish to do, I can respect that. It's not my job to have a go at anyone's typing skills besides my own.

I don't like chatspeak, I didn't notice it much until I started playing maplestory. On they they are all like: u, OMG, liek, haxorz, plz, AFK, 1337, itamz. It really annoys me sometimes. My boyfriend started playing too and it was quite funny, because he didn't know any chatspeak. He was constantly asking me:
What does brb mean? me: be right back
What does lol mean? me: laughing out loud
:P
