He is not stupid. Obviously he has fantastic memory retention, and btw, using that ability to memorize pi doesnt fill up his memory. Memory is something that you need to practice at to keep it good. By working on this he has likely increased his ability to remember things. I think it was a smart move. Have you ever heard of memory exercises?

Now why would you ever want to know Pi to anything more than 2 decimals in everday life? For everything else, there are calculators :P

I guess I'm the one who doesn't have freedom of speech. I am SO sorry that I tried to tell Ammer he was wrong...

You're acting jealous-like. Who cares if he can recite a lot of numbers? Let him memorize it. It doesn't hurt you to know he's actually doing something with his life -- even if it is something as "uneventful" as your apparent lives.

Exactly, and that's the way it comes off, really. It's no different than learning a sheet of music (as opposed to reading it), memorizing the cards that are left in a deck to win a poker game, or any trivial memory skill like that. People do them, but they're so commonplace, people don't think anything of them. As soon as something outrageous pops up everyone jumps up to judge.

Ginger - How can memorizing something possibly be egotistical?

Because something as different and complex as that (not saying that he himself is egotistical) makes you look clever and special. I'm sure a lot of people do some of these outragous and complex things just to make themselves look good.

I personally feel that memorizing pi falls in the same boat as competing in spelling bees. Its a waste of alot of talent. How will knowing how to spell "Hillagillahamibafilapication" help you in real life? How will knowing 10k digits of pi, outside of getting an xbox, help you in real life? It WONT. So why bother at all? Spend all those brain cells you've got and learn some real math =).

Still, its really cool what that guy can do... I can only do like 8 :P.

and yeah, computers can use forumlas to get a bunch of digits of pi. For example, this page has 100,000 digits:

http://www.geom.uiuc.edu/~huberty/math5 ... igits.html

The record is a couple trillion digits. That kid has a long way to go. Still, hes young. If he hits even a billion I say his parents should buy him all of mircrosoft.

That's not recited digits though, that's recorded digits (no one can recite a trillion digits).

This Kid Is Weird, he really must be a pi-fanatic. Yeah, he knows he's smart, there's no need to go and show the world that your really smart by doing 8 thousand digits of pi, If it was for a Havard Scholarship, then he's not weird. But its just for an XBOX.

Meh. I don't think the kid is intelligent. I don't consider learning a sequence of eight-thousand digits to be particularly enlightening. Unusual, yes. Intelligent, no. He could be a high-school drop out for all you know.

He probably is, though. Damn smart kid.

I don't understand the problem here. Why is it okay for a kid to spend many hours a week playing video games, but when a kid wants to use his time to do something like memorize the digits in pi he gets looked down upon? What the heck is that about? O.o It's the same time and neither amount to much, so why dog on this kid who is developing his memory retention? I can see how that is very useful in life. If someone has a goal and they are that determined to get it, just imagine what else that person can do. I find that rather amazing. Also, nowhere does it say that this kid isn't learning their other subjects. They could be studying and doing just as well in them. The article is not about their grades, though, so they are not reported. Seriously, give intellect and drive a break. >.< I wish more kids did things like this.

Bashing some kid for memorizing pi is negative and frowned upon, but telling other members of this forum that their lives are uneventful is downright wrong. You may or may not be right about this situation, but watch how you address other people here, even if you disagree with them.

If you guys want to discuss why people who do things like this are looked down upon as opposed to obsessive gamers, etc. feel free, but keep far, far away from personal attacks.

I may know pi only as 3.14159, but it is great to memorize all sorts of constants. R≈ 8.31, c≈3.0x10^8, e≈1.609x10^-19, Na≈6.022x10^23, k≈10^-23. Those are as detailed as most of my professors require. That kid is great for his love of pi. I love pie too, especially with cherries. I just wish they gave awards for memorizing other things, ie, Simpsons episodes and Ranma 1/2 manga. That would be great.

That's nice for him, but all I'll ever need is 3.14159. I'm content with that. :P
