This is a very sad thing, and I'm glad the explosions didn't happen.

But, as a fun note.

I turned on my news channel this morning (in America) and they had a, get this, 20-second bit, in which they briefly mentioned a foiled bombing of airplanes in the UK, and then they launched into a--even better--FIVE MINUTE SEGMENT ABOUT CATS.

So I had to turn to Sky News. o_o

My best friend was going on a flight today. Her flight was one of the ones cancelled. I was on the train with a friend when she texted me and told me, I fo course had no idea what happened immediately sent a text to my mum asking her if she knew anything.

I find it a shame that a minority of people ruin it for the majority.

apparently you're still allowed to take on baby food - but someone has to Taste it in customs to let it on.

Same with, er, natural milk if you put it in bottles. You have to taste that too--it's not pasteurized, either. It's not even cold! I first saw that in Fahrenheit 9/11, but CNN said that it happened at some airport today, too. Yuck yuck yuck.

On the local news they had a lot of footage of people throwing out cosmetics and fragrances and grumbling about how much they cost, but more people were just like "if this means we're safe!"

Atlanta airport is HORRIBLE! i have endevoured to never go there again, i am going to avoid it at all costs.

But imagine how boring flights must be atm, you arent allowed electronics - so no mp3 players, and you arent allowed hand luggage, so no books or anything - ICK!

From what I understood, you were still allowed books and electronics--at least in the US, but I know in the UK it was basically essentials only, all placed in Ziploc bags. I know purses weren't allowed, though. Wonder how many expensive purses were surrendered today?

And what's so bad about our airport? I happen to enjoy riding on the little train that takes you between concourses.

it was the worst airport i've ever visited. (and its not like i've only ever visited a few airports - i think i've visited my fair share of airports). uncomfortable chairs, noisy, and nothing there except the gates and a food court.

i assume you could get someone you know to come and collect your stuff if you still wanted to fly. or they have lockers at some airports. what about peoples laptops? if they werent allowed to fly with them. people wouldnt surrendor laptops. what if you were flying from the uk to america for a conference. you would Need you laptop for your work. Or were they still allowed to take stuff if they checked it?

If they put it in their checked baggage that goes in the cargo hold, anything is okay. Cosmetics, toothpaste, perfume, laptops, etc. You can't create an explosive if the materials are all in the cargo hold is the reason.

There are a few little trinket shops at the airport, too. But I still think the train is the best part. They did add little playgrounds in some of the terminals for kids to play on, though, which I think was a pretty kind touch because I know kids get bored in the airport easily.

You mean the Atlanta airport? I HATED that place. It was a few years ago, I was flying AirTran (aka ValuJet XD) and the connecting flight to Raleigh was delayed a couple of hours. No worries, right? Just grab a bite to eat and play Pokemon? Nope. I was 13 at the time, so I had to be sequestered in a "kid's room" while I waited for the flight. All of the stuff they had in there was broken, even the NES they had. And it was all dirty, and they wouldn't let me leave... that place was awful. Almost as bad as Newark, but that's another story.

Anyway, it's a good thing they caught these guys. Imagine what could have happened if the government weren't allowed to, say, keep tabs on communications between these people?

Were you flying alone? Either way, that's pretty terrifying and I hope they've gotten rid of it. I did fly four hours to Las Vegas once on an AirTran plane...and there was NO TV. On a four hour Delta flight to San Francisco, there was TV, radio, and two snacks. What a comparison!

I wonder if this day will permanently change air travel, or just temporarily?

9/11 permanently changed air travel, but I don't think this will. It's just not the same in the public mind. A crisis averted won't have much effect on people, because there isn't any lasting damage. It's GREAT that they caught these guys, but I just can't see any sweeping changes in airline policy.

That is absolutely disgusting.

First off, I am very relieved that these terrorists were stopped in their tracks. This behaviour mortifies me beyond belief, to think that the only way people can communicate their problems is by blowing people up disturbs me.

They apparantly caught the group as they were planning the attack. An undercover guy heard about the plan, told the government, and they raided. The terrorists were not found in the airport (though they had a meeting place in a house nearby).

Basically: "New airline restrictions may be here to stay."

The TSA does say that electronics will be okay in carry-ons, mostly because of business travelers--there's no insurance in case those items get lost in checked luggage, and some electronics can cost thousands, so it does make sense. There's also talk of updating scanners to better scan liquid objects. This has definitely been a wake-up call for security folks.

Now to tighten our ports, where somewhere like 1 out of 1,000 barrels is checked...

This is too creepy :S My parents work for a company that does flat shares here in London, and about 2 houses away from one of the houses we rent, they found some of the people involved in the plots. Its so scary cause I've been there so many times with my parents and the people there seemed so nice.

I dont think I like living here in London now knowing how close all this is happening. But then again, where can you escape things like this?
