I think they did a mythbuster on that. Apparently they proved it wrong or something with bread and butter.

They were trying to prove that the toast always lands butter side down. Of course it doesn't :)

According to the law of large numbers, the more trials you do, the closer you will likely get to the true probability. Until you get to infinity (which can never happen), there is no guarantee.

But they also found, that when dropped from table level, it tends to flip once, and land butter-side down.

Eh, it's been a while since I've seen it. That doesn't really apply to the coin flip problem though :)

re the toast thing, i've seen a thing about that (on braniac i think), and they worked out that to have toast land butter side up, you'd have to either have really tall tables, or either really small or large pieces of bread.

Is it because the side with butter is heavier than the unbuttered side or something? o_O

No, it's because in most instances, there isn't enough time for the bread to flip over twice. (And land unbuttered side up).

Ooh, now I get it: if the table is tall or if the toast is small, it gets to flip more, and if it's large enough, it doesn't get to flip. :D

No.

There is a 1/(2^100) chance that the same thing will come up every time. Interesting, no?
