New Fantastically Amazing Translation For Meerca Chase!

Tue Jul 27, 2004 10:09 pm

Big deal.

Good to see they've translated 1 game. In French, its 15 words. 15 words. Fascinating, isn't it?

I don't understand how Neopets has the gall to proclaim itself an international site when so many aspects are singularly aimed at the English.

As a french speaking Canadian, I've wanted to enter the site spotlight, pet spotlight, Caption Contest, and Neopian Times in a different language but have been unable to.

Things like Mystery Pics and Conundrum are never available to these people.

They put about much effort into making the site multilingual, as Ruben is going to put into cliumbing Mt. Everest.

I'm sorry but I just bursted out laughing when I read that. But I do see where you're coming from. They keep saying "We translated the site in French!" but in reality it's "We translated everything except the Games, Contests, Neopian Times, basically anything worth translating on Neopets". They should completely translate everything before moving onto another language. It's ridiculous.

So who is this Ruben you speak of?

actually it is hard to translate such a big site and it must take lots of time. Also there is lots of languages to translate, for example Turkish, my language is widely-spoken as well. i hope to see neopets in Turkish one day.

i hope they translate all the site to lots of languages but i don't think so it will be done ever.

The amazingly expanding ex-American Idol no one cares about.

Last I heard he got stuck in his tour bus somewhere near Moscow, Idaho and decide to just hold up in there until his record sale royalties got him enough money to rent the jaws of life. It could take a while...

Presumably he's a guy trying real hard to climb Mt. Everest...

I am not defending Neopets actions, well I am, but this is by far the hardest part of upkeeping the site - translation. Considering they ask for 2 translaters per language, it requires ages just to get the base site translated, and in a load of flash games, there are a lot of words, and they have to change the send score mechanism itself - It's a base image with the Score and NP put on.

Neopets is an American based game, and the vast majority of Americna people speak English (Well, a mucked up form of mistake-ridden English) Their primary concern is to get the site working well for the majority of people, and they start working on the fancy stuff. Son't expect everything from TNT, just be glad with what you have ;)

Oh, I'm not knocking the translators. I realize that it is huge. Perhaps that is why there should be more translators than 2 per language. Even at that, this is the first advertised language update in a long time (although I'm sure that there has been work going on that has not been told to us. Shout out to the translators! Word Up my translating homie g's in the hood!)

If you couldn't speak English and the only thing you understood were the blurbs on the top of every map buit the specific pages were still unreadable, I can't imagine having very much fun. Throw in the fact that all the contests are out of bounds and you have a very un-fun site. If Neopets wants to reach that market, they need to go all out. Otherwise, it'd be more efficient to fire the translators and call it an English only site.

Plus, would it be so much to hire 1 extra person for every language to be in charge of the specific contests such as Caption contest and site spotlight? Simple common courtesy things like that are what seperate world class sites from mildly amusing sites with "potential"

PS Holy MTV generation, Batman. No one remembers Ruben Studdard?
Hello, I'd like something larger than a 30 second attention span and a memory that lasts longer than an episode of Spong Bob with a side of fries, please. Supersized.

If people can't speak english, then why are they on an english speaking site?

Seriously, do you EVER stop complaining?

Holy PPTers Against TNT Cruelty, Batman! (Look at me, I found a new catch phrase!)

That's the thing there, bucko; it ain't publicized as that. Its promoted as a multi-lingual, international site. Its repertedly been translated into 10 languages, including English.

But no, I totally see your point. When people come into America, they should all speak English, because it was originally just an English speaking country. If they can't read a Burger King menu and order a Whopper they should be shipped out immediately.

I could be REALLY cruel, and not to you Moogum, right about now but I think I won't.

Holy blowing things out of proportion, Batman!

Neopets is an American, ENGLISH site. They decided "Hey, what if people can't read English? It's not fair that they should be excluded, plus the more players we have the better. Let's try to make the site multi-lingual". They are in the process of translating and you have to be on their back about not going fast enough. Why are you even complaining? You speak english and can view the site in it's entirety. Soon other languages will be able to as well.

You're right! Why should I complain when I'm not at risk? Pffft, I ain't in no third world country. Them starving Africans is on dere owns.

What I'm saying is that if they are going to make it multi-lingual is that they should actually make an effort to include the chosen languages or use their resources towards other beneficial parts of the site. It shouldn't take 4 months to translate 1 game into 6 or 7 different languages and I'm assuming the effort that went into that could have been better spent if they are not fully committed to the cause.

And I could be "really cruel" and let my pet go back to dying so i can feed him multiple times a day...

On topic though... I think we all have to consider the fact that the site's nonuser content is probably growing faster than the translations are being completed...

It's because translating the site is not their main priorty! The workers at Neopets are English (sorta). The site is always going to be mainly english because it is such an international language. They are going to do updates in English. Their main focus is to update the site, and that is what they are going to work on: in English. Translating is a side project, and they are doing a good job at it. A good portion of the site is translated. The game descriptions are translated (and I imagine that trasnlating the actual games would take a hell of a lot more work). Once again they dont HAVE to be doing this. They are because they want more players to be on Neopets, but they'd have been fine if they just kept it in English.

And what is it with people comparing Neopets to serious world issues? A French child not being able to play Neopets because they don't speak English is a little less severe than hunger in Africa. C'mon...

And to clarify what I meant about it not affecting you: If a French child comes to Neopets and finds out they can't play it because they don't speak English, it is not going to affect them. It's not like something is being taken away from them. And if you're going to say "what about the players already on the site that speak French"? They must know enough English if they joined the site. It's not affecting them, it's not affecting the poor French child, and it's not affecting you. So why complain? That is what I meant.
