she didn't mention a deity. she mentioned a holiday. and christmas is a holiday that is allowed to be discussed. hmm.

also, anubis is a deity. also a petpet. conflicting messages that don't mesh well with neo's "no religion" rule.

Neopets no religion rule is only not to disscuss it in chat and such. For a good reason too. I think people are taking things way too far on this subject to be honest. You could nit pick all day and find tons of things that could possibly relate to religion, but it would never solve anything.

I remember people were reporting someone for having "God Bless" in their signature on the Neoboards.

People take the no talking about religion (to avoid flame wars) to their advantage.

Since Neopets is aimed at little kids, then Christmas (the commercial materialistic one *cough little kids shouting PRESENTS cough*) is alloud.

At least this Horus is not like the New Member on the neoboards. o-o

that's just plain wrong. neopets has their own on-site celebrations for christmas and easter!!! those are christian holidays!!! gahh that makes me angry. neopets celebrates holloween too, and a lot of people think thats a PAGAN holiday where they killed babies or something!
seriously, i think its bull when you cant talk about religion or race or anything.
that's like calling someone racist for wishing you a happy martin luther king day.

Halloween PB = Haunted PB

So then is Christmas going to be "Happy Valley Day"? And everyone will go around saying "Happy Happy Valley Day!"?

Just by changing the name, they aren't going to be changing the holiday. If they call Halloween Spooky day, it's still Halloween, they just changed the name. Is that really doing anything?

You have to understand, if TNT allowed their users to speak freely about Race and Religion than many debates would occur. If you went into a board and you were Catholic and saw a board 'Hindus Only. No Other Religions Allowed.' you would feel a bit offended. They're some ignorant people in the world which will offend other Religions by saying rude things. Therefore I don't agree with allowing freedom of speech for Religion and Race.

Wishing someone a 'Merry Christmas' or 'Happy Kwanza' is alright but debating about which religion is better is wrong.

OK, I know I said some posts back that I thought I was done with this topic. But I gotta jump in here.

I think the whole thread has gotten way off kilter. The original theme was that someone put up an online petition (which never work anyway) saying Neopets was "racist" (when I think they meant discriminatory), that they had been warned and frozen. We still don't know and probably will never know the entire story.

The whole christmas pb, advent thing...yes they said they may change the name of the pb and at this point, reading all these posts that may be a good thing. But there's so many items -- books, etc. that would have to be changed too. Advent? Does anyone really want that to go away? I know I don't. It's fun! And no, I do not celebrate christmas, it's not my holiday.

The easter issue..easter neggs, etc. Well, again, I guess they could change the names of things to, I don't know, spring? neggs, etc.

Halloween. Halloween did start as a pagan holiday, yes. It was never about killing anyone or anything. Maybe some of the druid sects went that far, but it wasn't a specific day thing. Halloween was a way of remembering and honoring the departed. Just like the day of the dead in some cultures. So, ok, change halloween to haunted for everything -- even more work changing every item name/image.

I think this has gone really far, just my opinion. When Neopets started they were dealing with mainly american and british iles...people who know and recognize those 3 holidays. As the site's grown to other countries there are many more religions and holidays, yes. I don't think TNT's trying to deliberately be discriminatory or ignoring the feelings, beliefs and faiths of anyone. Honestly.

No, talk of religion and politics isn't allowed on the site, including crosses in shops, wiccan/christian/whatever religion based guilds and posting on the boards (and yes, siggys). Why? Because people do get their backs up, there are disagreements, arguments, flaming and hurt feelings. It is just easier and better to keep it off the site for everyone - the staff, the players.

I don't post, make a lookup, put something in my shop, petpage, pet description with my beliefs -- that's not appropriate and I feel that anyone's belief (or lack of ) is their own personal business, not to be broadcasted or shoved down anyone's throat (like some topics on the boards try to do).

All you need to do is read through this topic, which has been very civil, to see how inflammatory religion can get. And anyone who goes to the boards and sees the "normal" nastiness that happens there I'm sure has seen how out of control a religious or political topic can get. It almost always ends in a fight and in tears when people are reported and frozen. Is it worth it? I think not.

i am not a very religious person myself and there's a whole lot of religions and festivals that i have not even heard of. debating or discussion of religion and politics is banned in neopets, as stated in T&C. as for neopets only celebrating certain festivals, i can only put it as a case of going with the majority. sometimes the news also announce the celebration of festivals familiar to Adam and Donna (and their countrymen)...my vague recall was of some Welsh festivals? yeah, they decide what to put in. fair? you can say it's not but we already know fairness is not an absolute in neopets. contradiction? festival and religion have always been closely related but not entirely the same. that's why festivals are mentioned and celebrated in neopets as long as their religious elements are kept out.

i don't think this thread has gotten off kilter. i believe it has blossomed into the real issue. neopets may not be racist but they certainly are discriminatory. it may not be deliberate, but it's true. we may not know the entire story of the frozen person at the beginning of the thread, but we DO know that neopets has a "no religion" rule that they do not stick to themselves.

the religious elements are NOT kept out of holidays on neopets. ::points at the christmas zafara again:: angels are absolutely a religious symbol.

i do think the christmas and halloween pbs should have a name change. advent could be a countdown to a new year. who knows, as long as TNT makes an effort to stop being so hypocritical and attempts to remove religious reference from the site.

fairness is not an absolute on neopets, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't try.

By simply changing the names they are not getting rid of the "religious elements". You could call Christmas "Ugly Day" and it'd still be Christmas. The whole concept of a bunny giving out eggs (or Cybunny giving out neggs) is from Easter (commercialized Easter). Calling it "Spring Day" isn't going to change the fact that it is really just Easter.

hehe, sorry about that. on to your comment: they do need to do something. maybe not a name change but a complete change like the glass and stone pbs (i wonder why they changed those, anyway?) easter neggs could have a name change and be given out randomly all year. i don't know exactly what they could do, but as long as it's something. it's just wrong the way it is.

it's not like neopets hasn't made large sweeping changes before. like the two pbs mentioned earlier or the koi revamp, etc. those were done for seemingly no reason: why can't the holiday stuff be changed in the name of fairness and equality?

Actually they do give easter neggs all year, I got one last week.

If you're going to be that politically correct, I'm assuming we're going to run it till the end of the Chinese New Year, right? We do, after all, need to be fair to everyone. Plus, it's only an extra 22 days or so.

To make New Year's completely politically correct, it would have to be started at the end of October - yes Halloween IS the New Year for some people, then the "official" New Year, of course add Chinese New Year (I love celebrating that ) and there are other religions and beliefs that celebrate New Year's at slightly different times of the year. Just thought I'd toss that into the mix.
