It's been a weekend. Yesterday my car battery died. (I have a hybrid, and the 12V is in the trunk, which was full of all the stuff I was going to donate when I discovered the dead battery... so I had to unload it from the back seat. And then I have to call the various shops that stock the right kind of battery -- the OEM cost the same but last twice as long with a matching warranty -- and cross my fingers that a jump will get me there.) So today was researching the shops to call.
And then my housemate opened the water bill. Over 7k gallons in the past month. Typical is 1800 (which I still think is ridiculously high). So then I texted with the landlord, dug out the meter (which is radio-read), and calculated that it was running at a gallon every 1.5 minutes. I wish I was exaggerating. My housemate's toilet was continuously running (last she told me, it was an occasional thing). I tried the shutoff valve, but it was rusted shut. The landlord showed up, and we were finally to get it mostly off with some WD40, but the meter was still going at 10 gallons/hour. We checked for other leaks, including under the house, then she finally found a plumber to fix the part in the toilet. We went out and watched the meter for about 15 seconds. It didn't move at all.
I still have trouble believing that much water could be moving through that toilet. After the valve shut off, it was a little trickle. Maybe twice what you'd run a sink in the winter, but I've measured that before and gotten less than a gallon overnight. So that's nowhere near 10 gallons per hour. I'll probably go out and read the meter a couple of times tomorrow when I'm home alone to see if we have any other leaks.
But that was basically an entire weekend shot with tedious boring stuff. *sigh*
