From what I know about English history, one thing really puzzles me - why on earth did the kings keep naming their sons Edward?

I mean, Edward I was, well, a definite English namesake, but it all went downhill from there.

-Edward II, who sucked at all military strategy, who had every other ruling body in England declare him incompetent, and whose wife plotted against him to his death (wheeee historical accuracy!)

-Edward III, who lost an unbelievable amount of ground against the French and whose son, also Edward, died in same war

-Edward IV, who... eh, had a damned good reign, actually

-Edward V, murdered in the Bloody Tower at age thirteen

-Edward VI, who died of some incapacitating illness at age sixteen, before he could rule on his own, and is rumored poisoned by his regent

-Edward VII, who had a long, prosperous reign but was unspeakably boring

-Edward VIII, who stepped down in the face of marital scandal

So why all the Edwards? Was it one of the three Saxon Edwards, about whom I know nothing, or were English monarchs just big on cursing their offspring?

Actually I just learned... alot from this I didn't know anything about that... I don't do History since 2 years ago! Hmm It's seems that our king edwards have been... somewhat... unlucky...

*shrug* Maybe the monarchs didn't think of all the bad luck... or simply loved the name. XD Either way, I hope the Edwards (from now on) won't have bad luck.

Or maybe they liked cursing their kids. O_o

And I'm glad I'm not an Edward. They seem to have so much bad luck. Plus, I'm a girl so I really don't want the name Edward

Wow, Edward VII was 'unspeakable boring'. Geez, that name is DOOMED.

Our monarchs tend to have a small range of names.
They also tend to be crap, a lot of them. Not just Edwards.

As for marital scandal, Edward VIII abdicated the throne because he was in love with, and wanted to marry, a previously divorced woman, which was frowned upon.

Yeah, the Henrys puzzle me even more, really, as there wasn't a really good Henry until Henry VII. You've a point.

EDIT: "Unspeakably boring" was a joke about the fact that I couldn't read his history without getting that Wilbert Slinkhard fatigue, and so I only got the vaguest gist of his reign.

The Richerds didn't have a good time either I mean Richerd the Lionheart went to try and retake the holy city of Jeruselum and came so close twice but still failed and while he was doing this back home in England his brother was overthrowing him...

or if you look at the french kings- they started out doing well and then it started going way down hill (louis and napoleon, for example)

Richards didn't have a good time, true- Richard III actually quite a good King but Shakespeare made him out to be a loathesome hunchback.

Look. English Kings have been a bit dodgy, and some alright. Like most royal families. They don't use a large variety of names within the royals. There's nothing weird at all.
