It's been my experience that that's mainly a southern thing, farther south than me. Down south it's either all 'Coke', or it's all generically called 'Soda'. When I was little I called it Coke regardless of brand or flavour, but I grew out of that and started calling it Soda.
Calling it Pop is a more northern thing.

They call it "pop" in indiana, too. Don't use indiana as a gauge of the US, though - it's one of the oddest states out there.

Apparantly, you've never been to Kansas. :P

We call it pop here. My friend in West Virginia calls is soda.

I think "pop" is a midwest thing. Because it is called that here in Chicago as well.

I grew up in a town on the Illinois/Indiana border, have numerous relatives that live in Indiana, and find it necessary to go into that state every so often to visit them. Shapu is right, don't ever use Indiana as a gauge of the US. However, Brown County is a very nice place to visit. As are the Indiana Dunes on the Lake Michigan shoreline--especially West Beach.

I'm from WV - I imagine your friend's parents weren't born in that state, becuase everyone else calls it Coke. Order a Pepsi and the waiter will look at you like you just asked to put a window on a bicycle.

EDIT: RC Cola is really popular there, though - or at least, more popular in WV than in a lot of other places. It's still no Coca-cola, though.
