Agh!
I'm not Catholic but i'm so excited!
I"ve been to the Vatican (i'm jealous of all the time they're spending in the Sistine Chapel btw.) ... and man, I can just... imagine the charge, the energy that is there.
The adreniline must be running.

To hear those bells... *shiver*

Yea. After I heard the bells I got shivers down my spine. My mum told me that grey smoke had appeared so turned my TV to CNN. I think it'll be Cardinal Ratzinger to be honest. I can't wait to see who it is!

Yep. The closest Cardinal to Pope John Paul II. I wonder what name he has chosen? John Paul III?

EDIT: Pope Benedict XVI

Well, pope John Paul II was caled Karol Voitera (or something like that). They change their names. It's tradition.

Karol Wojtyla, actually.

The tradition of popes changing their names began a long time ago when a pope was elected whose given name was "Mercury." Having a pope named after a pagan god seemed inappropriate, so he took the name John. In recent centuries, it seems that popes have all changed their names, but there isn't any requirement to do so.

Also, naming themselves after another previous pope sometimes shows that they honour the papacy of that predecessor.

It's rather interesting, he did not take an Apostolistic name.

I can't believe we've got a nazi pope. Despicable.

I don't like him much.

Apart from him being a rampant right-winger ('let's help spread AIDS in Africa!') I don't like his hair.

Although I don't agree with some of his views, and I agree with you on the hair, how on earth is he a Nazi pope? Was he a supporter of the Nazi party? Oh my, I'm starting to sound like Iashi!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/documentaries/profile/ That's his profile. Al though Igg has a point, I think her opinion was a bit over-board, nazi, despicable, and let's spread AIDS ... ah well, I'll just shut up about that.

I myself don't know that much yet aout the pope, except for what I have read. But I guess it all idn't that important to me as an individual.
