I'm having a bit of trouble with an icon I had made for LJ.

In my Photoshop file, it says width 100 pixels, but when I save it as a .gif it cuts the sides. O.o I have no idea why this is happening. Does anyone have any idea and advice on how to fix it?

It also has an annoying white edge that I've noticed on graphics if I use a blend technique. This image has emboss which creates the white edge. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I fixed that weird cutoff on the first icon. I had to squish it in a bit more. I guess the elipse was at the 100 pixel mark, but the effects spread past. I pushed it in until most fell into place.

How do you save your *.gif files? Do you go File > Save, or File > Save for Web ? File > Save uses default settings that can often screw up *.gif and *.jpg images, so I'd recommend Save for Web instead. Other than that, I really don't know...Not much you can do about that. *.png files support partial transparency (for soft edges like that), but Internet Explorer doesn't support it, so it ends up looking funny. Eventually I think it will, though. *.png transparency is very similar to *.gif transparency, so it should be easy for you to resave the files if you want to do that.

I saved File > Save for Web. I've tried shortening the image (width-wise) and such, but then it gets squashed and the problem continues. I'll keep playing around with it, though.

Thanks for the advice on the other. I'll try that. Anything can be better than those horrid white edges. lol

If you wanted an icky edge that isn't as smooth (but it gets rid of the white edges), you could set "matte" to "none" when you save for web. Unless you have a defined border, you'll end up with a jagged edge, which really isn't pretty.

I have that problem with transparent gifs when the edges are smoothed sometimes. The halo is caused by pixels that aren't completely erased. I fix that by making a new layer on the bottom and filling it with that lovely transparent gif green that is so popular. Then I zoom in really close and look for those pixles and completely erase or delete them. Sometimes it takes a few times to get them all. Then I delete the horrid bg and resave.
