Spanish.
I live in California, so I've made good use of my Spanish. I can understand a little French and Italian, which is pretty cool.
Chinese is ridiculously hard to learn, but probably because a friend tried to teach me. I can't pronounce a lot of things in Mandarin (and I'm Asian, so I should be able to say weird sounds) and the written language was challenging as well, because no one way of wrting anything is really proper.

if you know either korean or japanese you can tell if your neighbor there is speaking japanese or chinese or korean....
if you just know chinese you night get confused if you hear oral korean and japenese spoken simantaneously...
japanese and korean sometimes...(very sometimes) sound similar...
languages i know::
korean
english
french...learning in progress
and can read some chinese characters but not pronounce them...
if you've already started on asian languages you should keep continuing on asian ,and if european then continue on those...its easier that way..

I'd say Japanese because it's pretty easy

But if you like Spanish better, you should choose Spanish of course. Just choose a language you like alot, that makes it easier to learn.

You live in Canada? (or was I looking at the wrong post?) Anyway if you do, head for French, I hear it's everywhere there.
I live down in the US and decided to learn Spanish. It was kinda hard for me at first but once I got the general idea of how a romance language worked it was pretty easy. It's kinda neat too because now I can also understand some and French and Latin.
Also heard somewhere that Spanish is the easiest language to learn.
So, there's my two cents!
Good luck!

日本語は楽しみである。私は現在それを学んでいる。 私はAltavista の訳者に感謝する。
(Japanese is fun. I'm currently learning it.
I thank Altavista's translator.)

I live in Manitoba, so I didn't have much choice in learning French. Unfortunately, the Franch teacher wasn't the best, so a lot of the other students in my class ended up not learning much. I, of course paid absolute attention and remember every single part. Yeah right.
I remember some French, basic verbs, nouns and such, but that about all anyone could have retained from that class. My teacher wasn't harsh or anything, just the opposite, way too easy and very hard to learn anything from.

One time my Spanish teacher told us that Spanish is the easiest language in the world to learn, as a second or first language. I'm taking Spanish and I find it extremely easy because the grammar is the same as English in most cases and pronunciation is easy.
If you decide to take Korean, there's this poster-chart-type-thing that you can buy, like a multiplication table only with Korean characters. They call it "My baby's very fisrt Korean poster" or something. Buy one if you take Korean.

I don't have any experience with western languages other than English, but Mandarin is the hardest language that I'm learning. I hate the pronunciation, they have different tones and the meanings are often totally different by each tone... but the hardest are the characters. Even if you know the meaning and the writing of each character, their meanings will differ once another character is mixed in to form a new word. Not to mention those phrases that are hard to interpret >.<
Japanese is fun and easy to learn, though I hate it because it shares the same kanji as mandarin, but you can understand a lot just by understanding the hiragana. I have no tutor and now I'm slowly learning it either online or by watching anime. If you understand japanese, you can watch anime that are not subtitled, read manga that are not translated, or the latest video games without the need to wait for months before the English versoin is released. Those are massive advantages in the entertainment world, mind you.
