Just suppose, for the sake of argument, that you have a large block of stone. While staring at this block of stone, it dawns on you that perhaps you should carve it into something. Luckily, you have a hammer and chisel handy.

But it's no ordinary hammer and chisel. Somehow, no matter how hard you hit the chisel, exactly one-half of one percent of the block chips off.

How many times do you have to hit the chisel before the block is less than half of its original size?

I need help. Would you have to decrease the amount since it is being chipped off.

Think about it with different fractions ... and it makes more sense.

Let's say the chisel took off *half* of the block.

When you hit it the second time would it be gone? Nope ... 25% of it would still be there.

That's my hint. (and ... as always ... Excel is cool.)

I think I have to take some more math classes since there are a lot of holes in my memory. I think I got it. Can I confirm with someone.

I don't have Excel, which is a shame, as I know exactly what to do. I can't be bothered to do it by hand, takes way too long that way. I need to nag my parents for it, again.

I think they posted it earlier than the last couple. I got my answer in in about 3 minutes after I saw it. I think I got this one, but maybe not good enough for top 250. But I won one 2 weeks ago so I won't complain. I like the math ones.

Last weeks had me puzzled for two days - and even then I had to head over to the neoboards where they were practically giving the answer away.

i entered my answer i bit ago. i really hope it's right, but it didn't seem right. i just counted out on the calculator. really inaccurate
