Well, unless you have a problem with removing and re-attaching your petpet, you don't have to really worry about it. The petpet will revert back to its original form when removed. Sometimes, when a petpet is turned to soot, it will end up turned back into another petpet.
Very, very rarely (hasn't happened to me yet after all this time, though it's happened to a few others, the petpet will disappear. If you're zapping an expensive petpet, well, that's a big risk. I tend to zap petpets that are cheap, under 50K. Well, I guess cheap is relative. Whatever you are willing to lose.
Overall, I find that it's fun. I get to have different petpets all the time. And I use the regular secret lab ray on a lab pet, so I enjoy having an ubercheap zapped petpet on my lab pet to zap into an unusual petpet and give away with the zapped pet. If I don't get an unusual petpet, I remove the petpet from the lab pet before giving it away, but it's still fun to see what comes of the zappings.
