You can't turn fat into muscle. Fat is fat, muscle is muscle.

You can lose fat and gain muscle mass.

Muscle weighs more than fat so if you're skinny and built and you step on a scale and be like ZOMG IM FAT. You're not. <.< The times I've had to explain this to the kids at cross country/track. -_-

Just to add to this- muscle is denser than fat, which is why you can be slim and built and way more than someone who is a bit flabby.

I actually lost weight when I first stopped doing athletics.

Now I'm just chubster.

It's also why track stars and basketball players should never be allowed to swim: No fat means no flotation.

I used to float exactly the same way a bowling ball does. Now I have a spare tire (only a bicycle tire, mind you), and so my hips float but the rest of me sinks. I still drown easily, I just look like a moron doing it.

Its not the same at all. You can quite happily gain a lot of muscle mass without losing any fat whatsoever. In the same way you can lose fat without gaining any muscle whatsoever.
