You've been hit by the Green Apple Glitch. No one really know why it happens, but as to why green apples, I think the_dog_god posted an explanation back on page 5 of this thread.

A green apple is item #1. Whenever an item giving code is mucked up, it seems to revert to giving green apples. I remember the cove had a tantrum one day, and resulted in very expensive apples. My bet is something went wrong on one of the servers, or with one of the username databases and it reverted to apples.
