I just got the disease for the fourth time in a week.
Am I terribly unlucky, or has this happened to anyone else?

Getting WoE diseases during the time for a disease change is generally considered lucky. You can make lots of money if you are one of the first getting the new disease.

How so? I can see how you'd be able to save money, when the price of the medicine for the new disease hasn't inflated yet - but making money? That I don't get.

Ideally, you know what the disease is before everyone else. Therefore, you can stockpile on the cure while it is still cheaper, hoard it, and resell after it has inflated.
At least, I think that's what sid_basu was getting at.
