State things authoritatively, without making appeals to the reader personally, like "How would you feel if you had to go hungry every night?" I remember those papers from high school. You stick to factual statements like "Every day, the average Nigeran eats X quantities of food, while the average American eats X + a lot more food," or position statements like "People starving is not right." These are horrible examples, but that's because persuasive essays are generally hard to do without having a bunch of statistics on hand to pad it out.
